Some of my favorite recent pictures: ( thumbnails )I originally started this journal as I was going through family pictures and they were bringing up memories. That phase seems to have passed, for me, and now I'm pondering what to do with it. I think it's still useful . . . for me, anyhow. |

Me, my kid sister, and my niece Rachael I thought I was a homely child, unattractive and not very loveable. Except for the blue polyester plaid pants (and seriously, they weren't so nerdy in '76), I really and truly was danged cute at 13. I got my first kiss (and make-out session) not long after this photo was taken. I got my second kiss five years later. |

Oakland Hills Fire -- after For some reason, as I go through my old photos, the fire photos are really affecting me. Even before I noticed them in my stack of "photos to scan," I was noticing again how the hills have grown up thicker with eucalyptus than before, and the plan to places houses farther apart and make roads wider is barely there. And I might be wrong, but I think that Oakland never did get around to making its fire hydrants compatible with the hoses of surrounding towns' fire departments. But anyway: I'm thinking of it, almost fifteen years later. |

Mill Street, Anderson, California I just pulled this up for a Free Association post, and, well, there's a reason I called this journal "visual memory". Seeing pictures like this can send me deep into reverie, so after I stared and remembered for 15 minutes or so, I decided to toss it thisaway. The flickr post itself is full of "notes" (the little stickynote-like tags one can put on the image) describing details. |

Super hero wall Sometimes I run into weird memory responses, and did when we stopped in this parking lot. Joe and I stopped into the 7-11 that adjoins this wall to get a Coke Slurpee (oh yay it's Coke Slurpee season!), and I remembered that in 1977, the 7-11 was a tiny private grocery store, and that I once swiped a container of nutmeg from the shelf because someone told me eating nutmeg in quantity could get one loaded, and at 13 or 14, I wanted to give it a try. I lived a block and a half from this wall for pretty much the worst year of my entire life. Maybe I should go farther down that street and see what's become of the neighborhood. |

Burney Falls I didn't take this, but I want to share it. Here's how I commented on the picture on Buck's photostream: I have visited those falls more times than I know, as my mom grew up in Modoc County and I grew up in Redding, and Mom took us to Burney as often as we could go, pretty much.
Sometimes I google around from photos, just because Burney Falls is sort of my church, it's one of my favorite places in the world, and just looking at photos is sometimes enough to help me feel cool and peaceful.
And this is the best picture of my wonderful falls that I've ever, ever seen. Thank you so much. (done) |
